Killer Valley Horror Film Festival
Location: Ashland Elks Lodge Dungeon, 255 East Main Street, Ashland; enter at the front entrance on E. Main St. < map>
Time: 6:00pm till late
The Killer Valley Horror Film Festival is a celebration of independent films in the "Horror" and "Sci-Fi" Genres. By showcasing the films in an outlet for Independent Filmmakers to interact directly with their fans and gain film exposure, the KVHFF hopes to keep the spirit and imagination of indie cinema alive and well in the Rogue Valley and beyond.
Named for the Rogue Valley (killer being one synonym for rogue), the KVHFF is hosted each year in Ashland, OR, but open to filmmakers worldwide. Surprisingly all films at the 2010 festival just happened to have been made in the Pacific Northwest - from B.C. down through Northern Cali. While not limited to regional submissions (2008 KVHFF "Best SFX" Winner was Langliena, from Italian Filmmaker Emiliano Ranzani), it is thrilling to see the caliber of films coming from this area.
For more information, visit the KVHFF website.

Casting in Southern Oregon presented by Bruce Hostetler:
Discussion and Live Casting demo
plus an update on the upcoming Legislative Agenda

7:00pm: Introductions and Announcements
7:30pm - Government update
8:00pm - Casting Presentation and Mock Casting Session
9:00pm - Adjourn
About Casting in Southern Oregon
Unlike the film markets of the big cities, where casting directors and talent agencies abound, we have to do things our own way in Southern Oregon. But just because we are short on the method, we aren't short on the talent. Thanks to the thriving theater community, anchored by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, as well as the active filming community, there are lots of capable and talented actors in our midst.
Casting Director and local Theater Director Bruce Hostetler will take us through the process on how too spread the word and seek out the talent in our region that you need for your project.
Following this informative presentation, Bruce and an acting colleague will demonstrate a successful casting session: how to work with the actor, to prepare them for the role, to see how they take (or don't take) direction, and more.
About the upcoming Legislative Agenda
Statewide elections are upon us in a few days and the film industry in Oregon has been very involved finding out which legislators are pro-filming and which aren't. The state incentives are up for renewal in the coming session and its important for the industry to once again band together and make sure that our needs are met and that Oregon remains competitive among the states.
Bruce Hostetler recently attended a big meeting in Portland on behalf of SOFaT and will fill us in on the latest plans and goals of the Oregon Film Office, OMPA, and the those working to bring together all of the state's organizations into a cohesive lobbying force.

SOFaT First Wednesday
October 6, 2010
6:30pm - Meet and Greet
7:00pm - Introductions and SOFaT news
7:30pm - Demonstration of Canon 5D Mark II HDSLR and Tour of studio and equipment
9:00pm - Adjourn About the Canon 5D
From Vincent Laforet, one of the preeminent shooters of the 5D:
- The 5D MKII camera produces the best video in low light that I’ve ever seen - at 1080p. A top commercial film editor who who regularly edits RED camera footage, and has seen the raw footage from the 5D MKII - says the 5D MKII is “far superior to the RED camera” in terms of low light performance…
- You can use your prime and zoom lenses from your Canon still cameras with it - and shoot wide open… so you can shoot films with fisheye lenses, 50mm 1.2 as well as the 200mm f2 or 400mm 2.8 that you may already own…
- This camera is so easy to use - that you can work incredibly quickly, mostly handheld - without a huge production - and using natural light - ergo you don’t need a huge budget and tons of preparation anymore… forget the lighting trucks and generators that take up entire city blocks…
- This camera will sell for approx. $2,700 - and perform better than many $100K plus video cameras out there…
It has the potential to change our industry.

March 3, 2010

Map and directions to Hanger 6:30pm - Meet and Greet
7:00pm - Gyro-camera Mount and Helicopter Demo
8:00pm - SOFaT general business meeting
9:00pm - Event ends
9:30pm - After event mixer (no-host bar) at Martinos Gyro-camera Mount and Helicopter Demo by SOFaT member Brim Aviation and Shawn Adams
Aerial photography may have seemed a daunting or out-of-reach addition to your production, but no longer. Come check out the gyro-stabilized camera mount and helicopters based right here and available for filming in Southern Oregon. The Tyler MiniGyro Camera Stabilization system is designed for cameras weighing up to 40lbs. It is powered by 2 KS-9 gyro stabilizers and requires no mounting of any kind, yet the weight of the camera is supported by the mount. They are working with Tyler Camera Systems in Southern California to have this device available to filmmakers in Southern Oregon. What this really means to us is that there is a Tyler MiniGyro based 100% locally and available anytime without the cost and time of shipping to get it here. And its not limited to just helicopters. The mount can be used in cars, trucks, boats, ATV, motorcycles, or even handheld, to achieve that smooth, gyro-stabilized Steadicam shot you've always wanted! About Brim Aviation:
Brim Aviation has 5 helicopters and plenty of very skilled pilots. Their helicopters range from 4 seaters to 6 or 7 seaters, including an R44 Raven II (Piston helicopter), three MD500 Turbine helicopters, and "Black Betty", an MD600N (NOTAR) (also a show helicopter), one of the smoothest and quietest helicopters, with it's 6 main rotor blades and no tail rotor. In the camera department, Brim Aviation has a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon 7D available for rent, or bring your own camera. According to Shawn, it seems REDs are on the Tyler Mount more than anything. About Shawn Adams:
Shawn Adams is a DP, Camera Operator, Editor and 3D Artist. He is a licensed helicopter pilot as well as flies airplanes and autogyros (you know, James Bond, Mad Max... yeah.. one of those). He has been flying for about as long as he has been in the film business. His company is Rotor-Head, Inc, which specializes in all forms of production, from aerial photography, still photography to HD and 3D. Visit his website at http://www.rotor-head.com. Shawn has lived in Rogue Valley since 1997, with a 4 year vacation to Australia where he interned for Panavision, Sydney and learned the way of the big cameras in the late 90's. It was in Sydney where he also bought 2 different Steadicams and became Steadicam certified at Fox Studios, Sydney. However his love of flying has him in helicopters quite a bit these days.
