Industry Day at the State Capitol
Time: All Day
Location: Oregon State Capitol, 900 Court Street Northeast, Salem <map>

Join your colleagues from around the state in support of the film industry. Two years ago we prevented the OPIF program from being extinguished by working together to prove the value of media production jobs on Oregon’s economy. Now it’s time to do so again, and once again it is an uphill battle. We need your help.

HB 2267 supports doubling the business we recruit from OPIF and expands the program to include post-production and video games in addition to the major and indie-budget projects it currently supports. Every Oregon legislator needs to hear from us, and that will only happen if you help out.

Drive up to Salem either by yourself or with some fellow members or film industry supporters and drop in on our elected officials to voice your support for HB 2267 and urge them to support the Governor's proposal to increase film production in Oregon by increasing the incentive.

For more information including the meetings scheduled with specific legislators, arrival time and carpool information, email governmentactionteam@filmsouthernoregon.org.

Bill Boyle is an award winning screenwriter who has been involved in the film industry in both Canada and the U.S. for over 25 years as a writer, director, agent, producer, story editor and mentor. More information on Bill Boyle can be found at www.billboyle.net.

He has become one of the most popular script consultants in the industry and has consulted on nearly 1,000 screenplays. Creative Screenwriting Magazine rated him among the top 10% of screenwriting consultants.

He presently teaches screenwriting at UCLA Extensions as well as lecturing at various universities and film schools throughout Canada and the United States. He also writes a bi-monthly column called “The Visual Mindscape” for www.scriptmag.com.

From Bill:
"A fully realized screenplay exhibits its story primarily through images: a "visual mindscape" told within the dramatic structure. This is why I believe that screenwriting is matchless as a form of storytelling. If done properly, the reader not only imagines the 'other world' you created, but becomes viscerally connected to it. By being able to actively participate in the unfolding of the story, the overall experience for the reader becomes a more visceral and luminous experience."

Killer Valley Horror Film Festival
Location: Ashland Elks Lodge Dungeon, 255 East Main Street, Ashland; enter at the front entrance on E. Main St. < map>
Time: 6:00pm till late

The Killer Valley Horror Film Festival is a celebration of independent films in the "Horror" and "Sci-Fi" Genres. By showcasing the films in an outlet for Independent Filmmakers to interact directly with their fans and gain film exposure, the KVHFF hopes to keep the spirit and imagination of indie cinema alive and well in the Rogue Valley and beyond.

Named for the Rogue Valley (killer being one synonym for rogue), the KVHFF is hosted each year in Ashland, OR, but open to filmmakers worldwide. Surprisingly all films at the 2010 festival just happened to have been made in the Pacific Northwest - from B.C. down through Northern Cali. While not limited to regional submissions (2008 KVHFF "Best SFX" Winner was Langliena, from Italian Filmmaker Emiliano Ranzani), it is thrilling to see the caliber of films coming from this area.

For more information, visit the KVHFF website.

Cicily's already has a relationship with the Southern Oregon film community too. The owners, Ryan and Zoe Lehmann, provided massive sandwich orders from their Ashland restaurant Zoey's Cafe to feed hundreds of extras on "Conversations with God" and "Calvin Marshall". And recently, they turned to SOFaT members to make a couple commercials for Cicily's. Check them out on the Cicily's website.

Locally, many of IMD’s past and current roster have appeared in Southern Oregon filmed productions over the years, proving that IMD’s talent doesn’t just look good in front of the camera, but can deliver quality performances.

One of the reasons that IMD has been so successful is that owner Teresa Pollman always maintains integrity and high standards for excellence. She demands that her staff be just as dedicated as she is to developing her people into successful professionals. Always eager to expand her organization’s connections to film and media professionals in the area, Teresa will give SOFaT members a closeup look at their facility, staff and talent.
